Director Vincent de Paul is back on target with this baseball story, achieving both the consistency and the unity that his other recent features have lacked. It helps to have Jon Vincent and Tim Lowe in the cast, for Vincent's animal magnetism is well balanced by Lowe's more sophisticated appeal. In fact, de Paul is wise enough to have one or the other of these stars in every scene but one -- and predictably, the erotic thermometer is at its lowest there.
The seven episodes in Hardball are fast-paced but hot hectic, and Vincent's solo proves that he hasn't lost that famous mouth. My favorite scene is the final one, in which Lowe and Vincent join Alan Lambert for a knock-'em-down threeway with a delightfully comic ending. More polish on the technical side (the camera isn't always where it should be, and the focus occasionally slips into fuzziness) would have made this a four-A production. Nonetheless, the consumer definitely gets his money's worth of first-rate action.
