Toby Ross's tale of a young man (Cass) who is sexually unsatisfied by both his marriage (to McCullough) and his secret affair with male friend (Correa) contains some of his best work to date. Cass's search for sexual identity in Las Vegas is moving and persuasively directed, and the performances are first-rate throughout. Cass's acting ability comes as something of a surprise, for he has never had the opportunity to prove himself before. At moments he is absolutely unforgettable.
The tape steers wrong in only one area: an overemphasis on the decadent opportunities afforded by Nevada's sophisticated city. One glimpse of life aboard Daddy Big Bucks' yacht is appropriate to show the fast-lane lifestyle that Cass rejects; twice around the same block is overkill and undercuts the features dramatic integrity. One might say it smacks of sensationalism.
Nonetheless, Sexy Billy Blue finds itself after the second orgy and concludes with a classic romantic interlude between Cass and his new lover, Alex Forrest. It's a near miss at the classic status, but still far superior to run-of-the-mill fare.
